Plastic Fermenter and Dark Beers

Post by TempTest » Tue Apr 15, 2014 3:22 pm

Hello,

I have a Wilko Velvet Stout that I'm planning on doing at some point. Just wondered, however, do darker beers such as stouts stain a plastic fermenter and will I be able to use the fermenter to do light coloured beers again without the flavour being impaired?

After doing a lager there is still a very faint smell in the fermenter (which has been thoroughly cleaned after use). I can only imagine this to be worse in a heavier beer.

Thank you.

Not really, mine are still white after a few stouts. The smell is normal. Just don't scour trying to clean, use soft cloths only.

I've done a fair few elderberry wines and found that freezing the heads and then using a fork to pull the berries off before fermenting them helps to control this. I think its the sap that tends to clump in the fermenter (and if you bottle too early, in the bottle even though it looked clear going in). I've had a few elderberry wines that tasted fine, but had floating crap in them.
