Keeping the biab bag off the heat.

Post by mbarn » Sun Apr 27, 2014 8:48 pm

Hello.
Just bought myself a 40l buffalo boiler :-), which whilst it has a concealed element, I'm eager to keep the BIAB bag and the grain it contains off the heat.

Off the top of my head, my idea was to use a cake tin. The type where the base pops in and out, so I would just use it without the base. Anyone use one?

What else is everyone using?

My bag goes bareback. Switch the heat off (I do so at the plug to be sure) and put the bag in. Dough in and mash. Pull bag, heat on to mash out temp. Heat off, bag in. Job done.
Had no issues with scorching or damage of any kind after 18 brews like this.

My element isn't concealed. When I bother,I throw in two frying pan splatter screens, joined with a couple tie wraps, with the handles bent up to brace against the sides. Have left in for the boil. Acts as extra filter
Just like trying new ideas!

Cake racks are often advised. I use nothing myself.

Thanks guys. I do like the idea of pan cover to aid filtration.

I use a cake cooling rack bent in half, it doesnt stop contact but to prevents the grain bag getting in and around the elements. If I wanted to apply much heat durring a mash eg a stepped lager mash Id look at firming it up so as to give some clearance

Being as I got my bag from Mareth, made to boiler size, I measured it so it fits spot on anyway! Highly recommended!

Read somewhere on the net a while back that a stainless colander without handles works ok.

Just looked her up, looks interesting. My initial thought was with 4kg grain, it would just drop down, but her custom bags could fit and tie to the handles of the boiler etc.

Thanks to everyone else so far.

Wilkos sell Hob covers that are stainless and fit perfectly I've a buffalo element. I used to use one. The only problem with it is it tried to float up at times.
