Shrond for back of element

Post by dean_wales » Tue Apr 29, 2014 10:11 am

Hi guys,

Looking for a cheap DIY shroud solution for the back of my two boiler elements. I would prefer a metal solution over plastic for durability but price is key.

The elements are Burshaw style elements but really quite similar to burco or kettle elements etc.

Any ideas? Just need something decent to protect the wiring from damage and reduce chance of a frazzled brew master! I would probably buy purpose made if one existed but cant find any.

Dean.

PS - My best option at present is these...

...with a hole cut out of the back and maybe use the element's own immersion-style integrated earth post and little nut (will need small hole in face) to hold box in place. I would rather one without a switch but cant find any on eBay.

a qmax will punch out the rear of a metal box like that a blank plate for the front and a 20mm cable gland thru one of the knock outs in the box side makes a great finish to it, any glue from a permenant epoxy or even a squidge of silicone sealant will fix, just check its secure before use.

the switch/fuse assembly in the face plate will hamper closing on the element rear so a blank face plate is a must, when looking at this myself for an element i later rejected i thought a switch n neon indicator woould be a good adition for indicating when on and easy issolation ... naw fraid not ;)

also mrlard aka Mark at homebrewbuilder has some threaded ss shrouds ;) perhaps not on the site, but email him for details..
ist update for months n months..

I used one of these:

As Fil says, a Qmax made the right hole in the back, and I made a couple more for a Neutrik connector and indicator light for my HLT (soz - plaggy, not shiny!):

I used a slimline lock nut to secure the element to the HLT, and had just about enough thread left to put the Screwfix box behind it, and secure it with a second nut.

Thing is, my element's one of these:

They have a long, hefty power lead attached, so I wanted to tidy it up. They're also pretty chunky, and leave a lot of thread available, so I was able to secure it in the way described. Lucky, 'cos the Screwfix box is surprisingly heavy gauge, not the thin sheet steel I was expecting. Not sure about your element, but you might be able to secure both element and box with a single nut?

Cheers,
Chris
