On work travels today came across a place where plumbers and such take old immersion heater tanks to die. Got me thinking the obvious thoughts re pre insulated, holes cut, elements in situation...I think you see my thought pattern. I know its not a new idea but has anyone ever cut the top off, and used either as hlt or boiler
Obviously, a good clean would be needed, even sand blasting and spraycoating interior ...and isn't there a sacrificial element inside
Your thoughts folks

no build thread, sorry.
It was not to complicated really, i just cut the top off with a hacksaw and drilled a hole in the bottom to make it bottom draining.

Re: any one done this
I keep thinking about doing this, mentally I've settled on using a hot water cylinder with a top fitting immersion heater, I'd cut off the bottom and turn the tank upside down, this'd give a sort of conical style, what was originally the hot water outlet at the top of the tank world become the bottom drain, it should give zero deadspace, the element would then be at the bottom too.
If the cut off bottom part was high enough it might make be usable as a good stand for the upended tank?
OR
A combi tank, the one with the cold header tank on top. cut off the bottom, turn upside down, the header tank makes a perfect stand, bottom drain and element could be fitted through the header tank into the main one?
Can't justify it yet so it hasn't gone any further than thinking about it. Please let us know if you go ahead with it

There is 2 x 3kw elements in the boiler which easily do the job, as for the thermal cut outs, i just removed them and the temp is now controlled by a PID, in the brewery control panel
