syphons

Post by brewjohn » Wed Jun 25, 2014 10:47 am

While at CPC ltd near me I picked up a couple of auto syphons at £1.84 plus vat for a pair. I cant seem to get them to work ? I notice quite a bit on the forum ,they are called Colley Pumps. Are they a waste of time or as anyone had success with them . For what I paid it would cost more in petrol to take them back for credit ! PS I have seen them advertised for almost a tenner for one !!!

Pics? Link?

I have fitted taps to my buckets now, I don't bother using syphons.

I have taps on my vessels and find that the best way but now and again make a 1 gal test batch in a glass demijohn and have to syphon this out. I thought they might do the job but they are going in the bin !!

I've got a couple of Young's autosiphons, like this one:

I've found the 23l version rather unwieldy for my set up but the "4.5l" one works perfectly (helped a lot by a clip to hold the tube in place).

What is the problem with the ones you got?

you have to squeeze the plastic bulb at the end to get the syphon flowing but there is not enough suction to start it ? I did find a few comments on various forums about them .

That's probably similar to the device I had to transfer water out of a bath for reuse on the garden. To be honest, that wasn't much cop either - a potentially neat idea but I think it struggled to draw up enough liquid to start a decent flow.
