How fast should a chiller chill?
How fast should a chiller chill?
I've used 8mm copper tubing wrapped around a demijohn. Its taking for ever to get about 26L down to a decent temp. I've got the water running fairly slowly so that the water coming out is as hot as I can get it. It's about 55 deg c after 30 minutes, is this slow?

Wave the copper chiller around whist its in the wort and up the water flow, you will notice a huge difference. The problem is the ground water temp is so high

I have a standard microbore immersion chiller bought off internet - i use the garden hose & run it at full whack , usually get from 100 - 30 in half an hour.
(as said above , I stir every 5/10 mins )

I had an inversion layer, the bottom of the pot was cold to the touch and the top quite warm. Running my hand up the pot and there was a definite area where the temperature changed with a sharp gradient. So I was cooling already cold wort which was fixed with some stirring. I've spread the coils a bit wider to make the cooler taller and will stir more often in future.

run it faster as well.. Either stir or move it around or use a pump

Recirculating the cooling wort should also give you endless fun developing effective non clogging filters...!

+1. The water doesn't want to be too warm coming out, hot water doesn't cool as well as cold water....Hanglow wrote:run it faster as well..

Re: How fast should a chiller chill?
if you dont keep the beer moving over the coil, a cooler pocket will remain around the coil insulating it from the hotter liqour.
the chiller design can also help one i read about was dropping to below 30C withing 8 mins!! 4 or 5 small coils hugging the pot edge iirc with a recirculating pump.. made me question it as my 10mm coil job took 35+mins or so with stirring to drop bellow 30C, i went cfc with the bigger kit as i didnt fancy stirring the beer for 90+mins at the end of a brewday before cleaning up

Mine takes 45m to cool down a 10g batch. Not a problem, I just turn it on and leave it, stirring once every so often.
Is there any real benefit in a super fast chill?

You should run the water as fast as you can, so it's as cold as you can get it coming out.DeadFall wrote: I've got the water running fairly slowly so that the water coming out is as hot as I can get it. It's about 55 deg c after 30 minutes, is this slow?
