STC 1000 wiring

Post by dloper » Wed Oct 01, 2014 11:29 pm

I just bought a pair of STC 1000 controllers and I'm surprised that there's no earth connections on them, so I'll fake up my own.

On the mains supply input to the controller, I'll use a 3 pin plug, connecting the controllers live and neutral to the matching pins on the plug. I'll connect the controllers live and neutral outputs to a heater and refrigerator, and run their earth wires back to the earth pin on the 3 pin plug. I don't like the idea of unearthed heaters and refrigerators, and I don't think the health and safety people would either. Does anybody else here use STC 1000s' in a commercial brewery, and if so, how did you get round the earthing issue?

And another question - I'm using small upright freezers for cooling and they are rated at 86 watts. Now, 86 watts into 240 volts comes out approx. 2.8 amps, yet the freezers are fitted with 13 amp fuses, presumably to cope with the start up current on the freezer motor. Will the 10 amp relays in the STC 1000 cope with the freezer start up load?

Hi

Because the STC has a plastic cover there is no need for an earth as the cover would not conduct electricity if a live wire became loose. A plastic box is also a wise choice to contain all the bits when wired up (I used a tupperware box).

What you have described in your original post is the solution. Simply run an earth cable from the heating and cooling socket and connect to the earth on the connector cable and plug using a connector block.

I used the 30mA as to be on the safe side 9as they can handle a greater load and have more room for pushing in cables.

There are tons of wiring diagrams and pictures through google which demonstrate this, I've been using mine a while and am still around to tell the tale!

Aye, thanks for that. As you've gathered, it's not the STC box I was concerned about, but now you mention it, I will put it inside another non conductive container. Belt and braces!
