Joining Silicone to Silicone?

Post by Waffty » Thu Oct 02, 2014 3:19 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know of a glue or similar that I can use to join two lengths of Silicone profile together? Basically I have a length of Silicone profile, I want to make into a round seal, so I need some way to join them togther.

As this is going to be placed inside my Mash Tun, it will have to be food safe, water proof and able to withstands temparatures of say 85C, to be on the safe side.

I've done loads of searches for Silicone glue and they all come back with Silicone sealant, or similar. I have checked out the Silicone Cord glue ie the stuff you use to make your own O Rings and that just looks like normal superglue, from what I can see, so questionable if it's food grade. Mind you, I know the hospital use glue to glue cuts, as a bloke from work had his head glued the other week :?

Thanks in advance :)

Yes but I don't have the thickness to fit split beer line around it, as whilst it's a tight fit, there are still some gaps. I have a profile that fits around the edge, it just needs a bit of tension to keep it on and also to help thin it down i.e stretching it a little makes a perfect seal.

So a simple blob of glue on each end, should in theory, give me what I want.

You might find that if you join the silicone, the heat will expand it and make it kink.
I use beer line, but it is not joined and I have a 1cm or so gap to allow for expansion.

I use compression rather than tension for my tubing. I have a thermopot mash tun with an Ikea splash guard. The silicone tubing is slit and then wrapped around the splash guard. The tube length is slightly too long so the ends are forced together when in position.

have you considered good ol ptfe tape, if you wrap it round the edge under tension the sides of the tape will fold over the edge wrapping round and round will soon build up bulk.

or there is a self sealing silicone tape, http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/silicone-self ... 24mm-n24gn when pressed onto itself it will fuse, I doubt it will adhere to another silicone material, i have some in my spares box, i can test it on some baking sheet tomorrow if useful?
ist update for months n months..
