Can you have too big a plate chiller?

Post by Jocky » Tue Oct 28, 2014 10:45 am

Currently speccing out my new brewery and looking at the different chilling options available.

I'm kind of settled on using a plate chiller, but wondering how big to go considering my brew length will usually be around 19 litres. Looking at MrLard's chillers (here http://www.brewbuilder.co.uk/index.php? ... y&cat_id=3) I'm wondering whether just to go for the biggest one.

But can you go too big?
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Bigger in terms of wattage just means you will be able to cool more quickly so it could result in saving some water or being able to run off more quickly. It's hard to take the wort any lower than the tap water going in the other side so I don't see any detrimental effects with going bigger. I've got the 125 kw one.

I also have thre 125 kW one - it is excellent and I generally cool 50 litres of wort in about 15 - 20 mins.
This weekend brew came out the chiller at 18.5 degrees C straight to fermentor.
