Yes, both have very different pros and cons, extending into issues of safety and cost etc as well as just the practicalities of brewing; I think the only wrong answer would be to assume either one is intrinsically best or safe. Theres always the possibility of freak accidents, but with good practice theres no reason why either should be especially dangerous - the problem is sometimes people don't follow good practice, which dramatically increases the chances of explosions or electrical fires and so on.
Brewing is an interesting field in this respect IMO. A lot of kit is home made by people with varying levels of knowledge, budget and ability to assess (or care about) risk, we tend to do things that are quite a way beyond whats expected in typical domestic situations and infrastructure, and use parts and materials that were never designed or specified to do what we use them for. It can be utterly fine, but an awful lot comes down to the person doing stuff as to how safe it is.

I'm glad I posted this thread. Was a bit worried I only had gas as an option and want to brew indoors. The Flexi elements look good. Thanks for the feedback and links.

fwiw a simple bottom drain could be achieved by using the spear hole thread to attach a 2" triclamp fitting
then invert and remove the base as the new top 
a perforated SS disc could sit above the central bottom drain as a hop filter too.. any size, it should just self centre in the slight dome shape.
granted 2" triclamp valves and fittings are not cheap, but it would be a classy build
