Fridge Smell

Post by DeadFall » Fri Dec 19, 2014 7:23 pm

I can't get rid if the off-milk smell that fridges often acquire after use. I've wiped the surfaces down with a citrus degreaser, making sure I get in all of the shelf holes etc. The next day I wiped it down with a strong bleach solution and left it for an hour before wiping dry with a clean dishcloth. I then dissolved half a campden tablet in a pint of water and wiped down (this was mostly to get rid of the bleach smell). It smells a lot better than when I got it, but it still has a faint aroma of stale milk. I've made sure the condensation hole was cleaned during this process and I've cleaned out the evaporation tray it drains into.

Any advice?

Are you leaving the door open?

Nope, should I be?

I've heard bicarbonate of soda is good for this. Never tried it though — too lazy.

Yep, put a few tablespoons of the stuff on a small dish and leave it in there - smells dissappear :)

I use Astonish clear anti bacterial spray. Spray well leave for 10 mins then wipe down with a few plenty thick tissues and leave the door open when not in use if convenient. :D

I guess my worry is that it's being caused by some bacteria which could ruin my beer. But the thing was thoroughly rinsed down with a 25-30% bleach solution, then a strong campden tablet solution. I've left the door open overnight, but haven't smelled the thing yet.

Just leave the door ajar when not in use.
