Cleaning mash tun manifold

Post by tourer » Mon Feb 23, 2015 7:53 pm

Just made up a mash tun copper manifold. Do i need to give it a clean with something like soda crystals? Also should i ignore the burrs inside the tubes where i cut the draining slits (it would be bit awkward to remove them).
many thanks

Mine is just pressed together so it comes apart with ease for cleaning. On that front, all I do is use some of the hot discharge water from my CFC when cooling the brew and a little soak in unfragranced oxi powder, then rinse and leave ready for the next brew.

Thanks pinto, i didn't know if it needed a good soak in something before i start using it. I've got some oxi somewhere i'll do that.

post build clean off the grease n sweat with oxi but after use a good rinse and dry is all thats needed imho.. to de-burr the tubes get a flat blade screw driver n rattle it arround inside the tube to knock off the burrs..

ensuring its bone dry b4 storage is way more important than cleaning with chemicals..
ist update for months n months..

My manifold is quite long, so I cut the handle off of one of these, and attached it to a piece of wire and kept pulling it through my manifold tubes to remove the loose burrs.

I also line my mash tun with a piece of voile which stops all of the grain getting into my manifold, because it was a complete ba$tard to clean.

Cheers

I removed the burs to stop them ending up in the brew, any bits would settle out, but better not to get them there in the first place. I used a rat tail file, held the file firm and worked the pipe up and down occasionally rotating.

I always clean my copper manifold with citric acid . No problem just soak for a few hours then rinse.

Mine is also a push together afair, if slightly pinch the tubes, it make a tight fitting into the elbows +1 for cirtic acid, cheap and very effective.
