Brew fridge heater temperatures

Post by lord groan » Wed Feb 25, 2015 9:34 pm

OK my 60W heating wire has arrived from Bulgaria and I've tested it, no problems but I confess to being very surprised at how hot it gets, too hot to hold but bearing in mind the wire is enclosed in silicon sheathing I'm not too bothered about damage to that.
I've tested it and the resistance is 809 ohms so that is 59.8W @ 220v, exactly as it should be, my voltage is 240 so thats 70W in practice.

Has anyone using the greenhouse tube heaters found they get very hot? Or these heating wires for that matter, I suppose I should expect fairly high temps as the silicon sheath has to dissipate that amount of heat from a 1.5m length.
Am I just being a bit naive? Wouldn't be the first time :)
Thoughts?

Yes, the heating wires do get pretty hot, as do the tube heaters.

No problem, I bought the same heating wire from Bulgaria a few months ago and was surprised and somewhat concerned about how hot it got, I have now used it for quite long periods of time with no problems ;)

I do wonder why we have to order them from Bulgaria though, no UK suppliers bothers me a little TBH...
