I'm wanting to make the move from kits to extract brew. I'm wondering if it's realistic to boil on my kitchen hob.
If I get a 15 litre pot will I be able to boil 11 litres of water in it? Can I go bigger? A 20 litre pot to boil 15 litres?
Anyone here manage a large boil on their own hob?
Boiling on a hob
Re: Boiling on a hob
Yes, it will be fine at that size although most hobs will take a fairly long time to move even that amount of water from mashing to boiling temperatures. I've been happily brewing small batches for a couple of years with about 9-10l going into a 13l stockpot and running it on a portable induction hob I picked up from Lidl (much more efficient than the stovetop).

Re: Boiling on a hob
Up until recently I was boiling 11 litres on my old gas hob. It was a strong boil - 15 or 16 litres would have been fine too.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Re: Boiling on a hob
I've managed 16 litres on my stove but it struggled. I've found 8 litres works excellent. Also this suits the brewuk extract kits I buy so I get the freshest hops/grains and my hob gets an amount it can get to a true rolling boil without taking forever.
