Fridge freezer as 2 compartment brew fridge?

Post by gobuchul » Sat Mar 14, 2015 12:32 pm

As this whole thing spirals out of control I would like to add another brew fridge, especially as the warm weather is coming.

I am looking one Ebay and there a lot of fridge freezers and it got me thinking about making a 2 compartment brewfridge/keg fridge.

I would like to run one compartment at 20°C for the FV and the other at 12°C for bottles and kegs for drinking.

Is it easy to split the power supplies for the fridge from the freezer to allow them to run separately?

Has anyone done this? Anyone have any pics?

Is there anything else I need to consider?

The free fridge/freezers I've taken apart only chill the freezer, then use a fan to push the cold air into the fridge to get it to temperature, they don't have separate compressors.

I guess that would still work, although you'd have to use the freezer as the coldest of the two, and it would then have to be the primary one, as you couldn't leave it empty and just use the fridge as you should never run a fridge or freezer empty, then you'd hook one controller up to the compressor on the freezer, and the other to the fan - whether you can get at all those things though is another matter.

Sounds like lots of hassle to me compared to just stacking two fridges on top of each other :)

Dev - Thanks for that. You just saved me a load of hassle.

I didn't realise they used one compressor, just assumed there would be 2. Seems obvious now!
