old water tank to hlt. help please

Post by Deebee » Thu Mar 19, 2015 4:53 pm

Gents. I was lucky enough to pick this up for free today.

its a fully functional 60 l water tank that i am going to convert into an hlt. The guy i brew med and i have different ideas as to how it should be done. He suggests leaving it as it is and making a direct feed to it. Then move the ready warmed water to a large pan to heat it the rest of the way.
I suggest we take the top off, blind the in and outlet (outlet on top here) and get a tap welded into it at the bottom. My idea would then be to bypass the thermostat by using an stc to control when the heat comes on or off. Fill th3 boiler on brew day and warm the water to brew strike temp, then increase the temp to get to sparge temp.

So two questions. Which is the better idea?

How is the best way to don it.
I have water into the garage but not the brew room and see the pipework needed as a bit much. Right now i carry water from the house to th3 brewery as i am not sure 8f the water quality from the line in the garage.
Help please .

Thanks
Dave

The water is through a plastic pipe and tying inn could be hard. Then i would need about 10 m copper pipe. Over here thats the best part of 150 notes!
The water quality is great but this is a 30 year old plastic pipe... not sure its food safe

most of the uks water travels through plastic pipes without any problems, and your going to be boiling it anyway
