how long to heat?
Re: how long to heat?
I dont have any stats as such around efficiency off hand but my Blichmann burner is super efficient in that it brings my wort to the boil in no time! Especially when I compare it to my other 7.5kw burner (from Hamiltons)
Re: how long to heat?
In theory at least, getting the wort to the boil should be far quicker than heating the water for the mash in the first place as you only have to raise the temperature perhaps 35C rather than 60C, and you're probably not working with as large a volume either if you heat all your mash and sparge water at the same time.
I'm sure some burners must give a better transfer of heat than others though. Perhaps by having the distance between the pot and burner more optimal. I must investigate this at some point as I have a potential use for a gas burner.

Are you sure that's 96%? Doing the same as my previous calculation I get that to be around 50% and now I'm doubting my maths...Aleman wrote: My Heat Shroud adds considerably more than a few % to the efficiency. I get something like 1/3 of the rated output of my burner with no shield . . . with the shield it's close to 96%. . . . The last time I monitored the rise , it was something like 40 minutes to go from ambient (~10-12C) to 76-80C . . . that's 60 odd Litres of water and a 11KW burner.

I'm only really guessing at the numbers that were involved, it was some time ago that I last checked it. I do remember being surprised that it was very close to the theoretical times for an 11KW electric element.JamesF wrote:Are you sure that's 96%?
