Split King Keg :(

Post by bungle666 » Wed Jun 10, 2015 10:02 pm

Just gone to test the beer i barreled at weekend, see if was pressuring the King Keg.. no pressure.. odd i thought??!!

Gave it a sniff of the S30 and there's a dirty great crack running across the keg where the name badge is :( that explains it!! wouldn't mind, but the beer is delicious and almost clear.... so now im frantically sanitising my other king keg to transfer and re-prime it, and i hope it doesn't spoil :(

Just though I would share my woes :(

Darn :(

Maybe though, this is the Universe's way of telling you to
switch to corney kegs.

How old was it? I'd be tempted to write a short email to the manufacturer if it's not eons old.

Was the pressure releif valve working properly? Even if it wasn't it shouldn't split, the seal around the lid and tap should give a long time before the keg splits in the event of excess pressure.

I have 1 KK and 2 Youngs Budget kegs and have had less trouble with the latter, though they all have their own quirks and idiosyncrasies!

Maybe cornies is the way to go, but I've always thought it looks like a big outlay and a lot more maintenance / set up and by all accounts they do present challenges of their own. I do like the simplicity of plastic kegs and have been happy with mine on the whole.

Swings and roundabout etc....

I find that KK last 3-4 years before they split and I make sure I replace all the valve bands once a year. I've been told the lids are meant to split before the cask but I've never had a split lid. I've been brewing for over 10 years now and I've probably bought 12 of them, they're something like £45 each at the moment? Funnily enough, I've only ever replaced my budget keg once when it split at the neck. I'm due some splits soon, been 3 years since I last replaced one...

Cornies probably work out cheaper in the long run, plus they have resale value so I've just gone that route.

That's why I have pressure gauges on mine. They are very easy to over pressurise and the relief valves are not always reliable.

The KK was one i had given to me, so its age was unknown, I have, however, been using it for about 3 years relatively trouble free, so i guess it was its time. Id love to go to corny's but the cost is VERY prohibitive for me ATM as id the price of a new KK :( I guess ill have to get a budget barrel, and see how i get on with that!

Cheers lads
