60 litre stainless conical fermenter - advantages?

Post by gobuchul » Mon Jul 06, 2015 2:16 pm

I bought a big job lot of stuff of one of the guys off here.

Included in it, was a 60 litre stainless conical fermenter. I did intend to sell it, it wasn't something I was really interested in when I bought all the kit.

However, I must admit it looks very good, shiney and lots of clamps for valves on the bottom and I am considering keeping it.

The thing is, it's too big for my brew fridge, so it be winter only brewing with a brew belt and covering with an old quilt or something.

Anyone who uses one, can you let me know what the advantages actually are over a plastic FV in a brewfridge?

The cone collects yeast and trub, so you can drop the yeast off prior to dry hopping.

You can also easily use it to reuse yeast without introducing any bugs.

Stainless is washable, by very interesting chemicals, so you can experiment with interesting cultures that would otherwise contaminate your plastic.

plastic can scratch and harbour bugs which if hidden deep in a scratch can survive most sanitation methods. SS wont ;) tho replacing plastic 2-3 time pre year will still make plastic cheaper for the first century or so of brewing..

Yeast collection covered above, going SS for the FV will also have a knock on cost as the expensive fittings will be needed to connect up for kegging/bottling and filling..

must admit i treated myself to a nice SS conical FV but it was a treat and prezzie to myself not a must have need it purchase. for temp control ive gone jacketing around an external copper coil and trace cable wrap. Ive also got a heating option i could employ with the maxi chiller used for cooling (inline 400w pipe heater)..
ist update for months n months..
