Cornie Keg Rubber Base

Post by danwlx » Thu Aug 13, 2015 8:13 am

Hi all,

I have just taken delivery of a couple of used corny kegs, whilst they look OK internally and were holding pressure when delivered they leave a little to be desired externally! One of the rubber bases shows cracks and is perishing a bit leaving black marks wherever it has been, it doesn’t appear terminal and I suspect it has plenty of life left in it however I wondered if anyone had any tips for cleaning / reconditioning the base?

If anyone has any tips for getting the external SS nice an shiny it would also be appreciated, barkeepers friend has helped but it still needs work.

Cheers
Dan

Yep one of mine has a cracked bum as well. Along with a couple of dents in the base of the SS.
Be interested to see if you find any way of sealing the bases. Mine mark everything as well.

Its the outer layer of rubber breaking down, no biggie layer underneath is good, take a green scrubby and something that cleans like oxy and remove that top layer, then wipe by spraying tyre spray on a cloth and rubbing in, making sure it goes nowhere near your posts .

Thanks Ciderhead,

Just to check, is this scrubbing back to a point where the cracks are no longer visible? Some of the cracks would appear fairly deep so would take some work, or is it just to remove a layer to stop the rubber leaving black marks behind?

I can't say I bothered to scrub, but I have used the back to black type stuff fro the £ shop.. It seems to work, not completely but better than it was

Ps, it's clear spray not black. I think someone else got a keg that had been sprayed with the black stuff, and it was still messy
