6000w element

Post by lord groan » Sun Nov 22, 2015 9:59 pm

Has anyone used one of these beauties? I'm looking to replace my burco element and a 3 x 2000w stainless jobby has got me thinking - so much more control over the power possibly?
BTW I haven't forgotten the 13a per socket/ring limitation.

thanks

looks like 3 x 13a powerfeeds would work with it, how big is your burco?? 2000w would probably maintain a boil with a bit of pot lagging ?

It's a 10 gallon job, has a 3kw butterfly element now, I thought one of the three would be about 2400w at 240v, then a second could be a booster to get a rapid boil going initially, the third would be a backup.
It just semed like a really neat solution to fitting more than one element!

Very nice. And stainless steel as well!

You did notice it's from Hong Kong, didn't you? Might slow the arrival time down and also cost you a bit more in duty and charges.

If it's less than £100 for both shipping + item cost, afaik you don't pay duty, or at least that's been the case with SS elements
I've bought from China

Fascinating! I've always been clobbered for anything over £15!!

You must have got lucky. The VAT limit is £15 according to this page, although I must admit I thought it was £25 inc shipping. Strictly speaking you are correct with regards to import duty, which doesn't kick in until £135 but that is "only" 2.5% whilst the VAT is 20 (or is it 22? I can't keep up.. :( ).
I always get clobbered these days but didn't use to. I guess they have tightened up a bit.

Interesting, maybe it also depends on what carrier is doing the shipping, as I've now bought 2 lots of elements from China, with the same carrier, and didn't pay anything extra.

It depends on what value the shipper puts on the package. I've had stuff from a few suppliers - names redacted - who have put on very low values (e.g. $4 for a $50 order). It's obviously dodgy, and I didn't ask them to do it (but no doubt they get a lot of requests), and of course insurance is only going to pay out for the stated value..

FYI - and totally irrelevant - but Australia allows $1000 before charging, which was pretty sweet (especially given cost of stuff down there). I have heard they are planning to reduce it substantially though.

Yeh the supplier will have marked down the value. Everything I've ordered from China always has a low stated value

How will you wire it up? I'm guessing you will need some new dedicated circuits to the consumer unit.

depends on the pole arrangement if 3x 2poles are employed it should be simple to terminate each 2kw element with a suitably rated socket.

if a common Live pole is employed its probably easiest to feed off a dedicated 32a feed??

How would I wire it?
My brewshed has 2 x 2.5mmT&E ring mains fitted. I'd put one element on one of them and a second (or wire 2&3 in series to get a lower power) on the other ring. By my calcs that'd give either 2 2400w elements or 1 at 2400w and the 2 in series giving about 1200w with a really low watt density.

Taxes from China/HK - I've had a few items from there over the last few years and have never been asked for anything so far, although i've never spent more than £12-15 at any one time.

I'll assume from the replies no-one has yet tried this style of element then!
Thanks for the input, I'm just waiting for a reply to my enquiry asking what size hole is needed to fit it before deciding what to do
