Re: King Keg conversion
Hi - is anyone still reading this thread? Quick query if anyone can tell me? Keg taps have been replaced by a JG 1/2" bulkhead connector, followed by a 1/2" to 3/8 reducer. Is that because the JG 3/8" bulkhead connector is too small for the tap's hole? I presumed this must be the case, or why do it? Just wanted to check before I convert all my PBs into kegs

Re: King Keg conversion
Nice thread. I have converted both a top and bottom tap to JG fittings. I was having some issues with cutting my tubes (yes ha ha) which do not form a good seal with the fittings and thus a lot of cleaning up. The first question I have is if there is a specific type of tube or if a special cutter is required? Second question is how short must the tubing from the keg to the tap be in order to get enough pressure to run into the glass?
Cheers

Hi data
Standard 3/8 beer/gas line worked for me. You can get special cutters, but I used pliers, scissors, or w.h.y. Length of line between KK and tap isn't fixed. The beer will need to be pressurised to reach the tap, whatever the distance (within reason!).
Cheers,
Chris

Hi chris,
Thanks for the info. I was thinking of getting the specific jg silicone tubes instead of these hard plastic ones i always use

Hi data
I would add that if you are cutting the lines yourself make sure the cuts are clean and square. The JG fittings can leak if the lines are rough or mis shape at the end as this can break the seal between the beer line and the internal of the JG fitting.

Re: King Keg conversion
+1 @ MadMarble - cut the ends as straight as poss. Stock standard beer line tubing does the job for me.

Re: King Keg conversion
Hi, turns out the tube doea not make it all rhe way in the jg taps. Happily i have some barb connectors on the way to solve those
Re: King Keg conversion
I am contemplating this conversion but don't understand how a 1/2 BSP bulkhead connector can work as the original tap is as far as I can see is 3/4 BSP so how could the original nut be used on a 1/2 BSP bulkhead I must missing something here and would appreciate any information that would make it clear to me what fittings to use.
PS I cannot find a 3/4 BSP JG bulkhead connector anywhere.

Re: King Keg conversion
Having used a similar plastikeg- Hambleton Bard one ,I find that 9-10 psi will give a noticeable level of carbing , about right for the hoppy APA's I've become addicted to . If needs be , and taste dictates ,it can be "scrubbed" off when dispensing via the Brewgas sparkler tap . A worthwile addition to this barrel and my K.K. top-tap . Also have pressure gauges in one H.B. barrel -I have 4 of 'em ,and a gauge in the K.K. The others have stainless clamp-in tubeless tyre valves for use with a digital tyre pressure gauge . That last mod takes up less vertical space in the "Ferment-O-fridge" than the pressure gauge , allowing 2 barrels to go in there , so long as only one has the gauge mod . Out of interest the fridge is a Curry's essentials cheapo model , with the obligatory STC 1000 .

Jasper - the 1/2" bulkhead connector isn't BSP, the 1/2" refers to tube diameter. The thread is 3/4 BSP, so the original nut will fit. I adapted 3 PBs this way (KKTT, Boots and Sparklets). All used the Waddington and Duval taps with back nuts, and all were successfully converted as posted above - 1/2" JG bulkhead fitting (re-use the tap backnut) with 1/2 to 3/8 adaptors.

Re: King Keg conversion
I grappled with this problem 3 years ago and went for a straight tap swap, this thread discusses how it's done. I also added a tyre valve to the cap and also found that at circa 10 psi it would absorb some CO2, particularly when full.

Re: King Keg conversion
Thanks for the info Chris, that makes things clear now and I have now ordered the fitting, all the rest of the conversion seems straight forward, Jasper

Do you know the part number for the JG bulkhead fitting please?Russ wrote:
Hi.
I've added this post again as the photo disapeared![]()
I'm using a Cornie Keg at the mo and I'm well impressed. Using the Tap that came with it from Norm and makes dispensing a joy. In order to get similar benifits to using a the Cornie and utilise my old King Keg, I've made afew alterations as you can see in the photo. I can now connect up to the Cornie tap for dispensing (via Blue JG tap) and add Gas via a CO2 bottle and one way valve (white and red bit) so no need to prime the keg with sugar.
I used a universal gas fitting (5/16 tubing) from H&G onto the S30 valve, a JG 5/16 to 3/8 fitting to get to the correct size for the one way valve, I removed the inlet rubber but retained the pressure relief rubber for saftey on the S30. The KK tap was replaced by a John guest bulkhead fitting.
So far it seems to work great, the pressure relief valve lifts at around 1 bar but I'm sure that this will surfice for carbonation (for bitter) and I use less pressure for dispensing.
It also has the advantage of holding a full 5 gallons unlike a Cornie
Hope this is of interest
Thanks
