2 x small fermentors in chest freezer?

Post by Matt in Birdham » Tue Dec 08, 2015 11:09 am

I quite fancy brewing a few split batches, of 12 litres or so each, with different yeasts. The issue would be how to fit both fermentors into my chest freezer (pic below with standard 25l bucket). The small (15l) fermentors I have seen online mostly seem to be shorter buckets, with a similar width to the 25l ones, but what I think I need is something tall and relatively thin - unless I work out some way of stacking them.. any ideas?

Could you not buy buckets with no holes in them and put a hole in the side for a blow off tube instead of the lid? Then you can stack them on top of each other.

Thanks - yeah, I did wonder about something like this. Got any ideas for a horizontally mounted airlock? Only one bucket would need to be set up this way. I suppose I could just run some tube from a grommet to a jamjar of starsan, although suck-back is always a possibility with that sort of setup.

The problem with two batches together in the same space with different yeasts is that you can only heat the space based on the temperature of one fermentor. What I mean by that is if one is having a vigorous ferment and generating a lot of heat itself, the other may not and it's difficult to maintain the same temperature in each.

True. I kind of figured that the yeasts I most often use ferment around the same temps (18-20ish) so I am hoping I will get away with it.. To be honest I can't see one getting crazy hot compared to the other with such small volumes, but I'm sure they would be times when the temp wasn't optimal for both..

ive been looking to a solution for this myself , i can get 6 corny's into a chest freezer but only 3 fv's . If someone could supply corny shaped fv's i reckon they'd make a killing ! Closest ive come is a blue plastic barrel with a sealing band , but it was £25 and if had more could fit 5 , all the other ones ive bought have been to wide in diameter

they do.. cornys themselves.. nothing wrong with fermenting in them, is that place still selling them cheap? another option might be nochill cubes. the shape of them means i can get a couple of smaller ones in a fridge no problem
dazzled, doused in gin..

I see you have a fan which if on all the time or when heating and cooling will minimise the differences between two FVs.
I have done the same for years without an issue once the fans were installed.

Yeah - cornies would be perfect, shame I don't have any :) We need an affordable plastic bucket in the shape of a keg, but I haven't seen anything promising in my searches..

It looks you want something like this:

But it's not so cheap.... getting into cornie territory...
