Leaking pressure barrel valve

Post by ben9393 » Thu Feb 25, 2016 3:30 pm

On my pressure barrel the piercing pin has a slight kink and is slowly making a very quiet hiss and then stops after a while it's not letting all the pressure out just a fair bit of it. There's a pressure relief but next to it that stops releasing pressure way before that but the one next to it is meant to lift up as it's a spring and releases if too much pressure is in there.

Where can I get a replacement one of these brass co2 injectors.

is that tape arround the valve base? generally an elastic band sits around there covering 2 x holes, the pressure of the elastic band contains the pressure, and it acts as a PRV like the 2ndary fittid in your lid,

could the tape be leaking?? can you confirm by holding your finger over the valve top for a lil while and seeing it the pressure builds up under your finger at all?

it might be as simple as buying a new elastic band, again as sold by any lhbs and online brew supplier as a refirb kit for a co2 valve

the valves are available from every lhbs and in some wilco stores too ebay or your favorite online brewshop wll have them too, but if changing an upgrade to an s30 valve and larger bottle may be worthwhile considering

about £20 for your first buy and then about a fiver to exchange for a full one when empty

my lhbs stock the s30 valves with a prv

and without a prv

And if applicable spare lastic bands

Yeah I think it's often tape on the threading maybe not sure it's a really old one has the boots logo so must be fairly old. Might just but a new 4 inch lid with a co2 injector they're like 12 quid also how does that bottle work so it doesn't just dispense all at once into the pressure barrel?? Might be earlier than buying 8g bulbs

if its thread under the tape then its probably not covering the holes for a prv band then..

with the s30 you screw on the bottle till it squirts a lil into the barrel the shortest squirt you can manage is generally more than adequate and it will save you quids in co2 bulbs.

i would expect a good 12months out of an s30 bottle with a couple of pbs on the go..

I'll get a pressure barrel top with new s30 is there any shop online who can sell them then trade them back in for a new one as I don't have a local homebrew shop.

It is a rubberband a big thick white one that looks like tape. Ill see how it goes as there's still plenty of pressure in the barrel for now.

u can give the lazy band a lil pinch to check its elasticity, sometimes if not rinsed fully after cleaning the band can stick open and a pinch of it off its post can sort it..

the valve used with bulbs and fitted with a pin to pierce them may not work with an s30 bottle, some valves are dual use and you can remove?upturn? (i dont know as ive only seen them on the shelf.. ) the pin may stand too proud and vent co2 before the thread has sealed if you use a bulb type valve??

I will be buying the proper s30 valves for my other PBS in the future. It's a pain as if have to send them by courier to be refilled.
