Kettle insulation

Post by AceMcAce » Sat Jun 11, 2016 9:54 am

Oh hi guys!

Long time no speak, I hope you're all well

So, I've got a question for you all. The few times I used my AG setup, I have struggled to get a good rolling boil in my kettle. I'm using a 100L Stockpot and one of the 8kw gas burners. I can't remember where I got my burner from, would have been a reputable and recommended source from on here, so I doubt that's it is a quality issue. I'm full of gas so that isn't running out, and the only thing that I can put it down to is environmental factors. (a light breeze :x )

Anyway. My plan was to insulate my boil kettle using some aluminium foil insulation (basically this stuff http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Thermal- ... m/p/210022 ) secured with aliminium tape, and also to make a wind guard to fit around the bottom of my burner out of foil roasting trays.

Can anybody see any issue with this, such as am I going to burn myself to death, and also is this actually going to help solve my problem?

Any advice welcome

Cheers

A wind break will help massively. I build a wall out of breeze blocks to shield the pan both during mash and boil.

I use the aluminium stuff for insulation during the mash but wouldn't consider it suitable during the boil as it's not heat resistant upto boiling temps with a naked flame

There arent many insulation options with direct flame heating - most things you could use burn when exposed to a 700 + degree flame. The only suggestion i could make is to make your pot double skinned and fill the void with heatproof material such as exhaust wadding - neither cheap nor easy.

As already mentioned, draft proofing and a flame catcher on the pot base will work much better

You were right. Built a surround out of MDF lined with foil insulation just in case it got a bit toasty, worked a treat. Rolling boil no problem!

Thanks very much
