Opinions on Corona mills?

Post by Norik » Thu Jul 14, 2016 2:48 pm

I've finally got everything together to build my own 50L one pot BIAB setup.
So I've started looking at other things to improve/change  .

I live 'out in the sticks', with no local homebrewer shops so delivery can be a significant part of my per batch costs.
To help with that, I'm thinking of maybe getting a 25kg bag of Maris Otter, and a Corona mil, so I only have to pay delivery once.

Anybody here use A Corona mill, what's your experience of them? They seem much cheaper than a roller mill.

I bought one thinking I'd save a few quid. Absolutely dire, I sent it back the next day. It's well worth buying a proper roller mill, I've had mine years and love it.

Never used a corona mill myself and there are a lot of different opinions about using them, some good some bad MrL does a 2 roller mill at a reasonable price.

If you are crushing all grain by hand ie the full grist. They are too much work. And messy.

For crushing a kg of specialty malt they are fine. Roller mills are better though.

Thanks for the opinions. I would be using it for my base malt, so it'd be doing ~4kg of malt in a go.
I was planning to power it with a drill, but then the same could be said about a roller mill.

I think I'll likely add a roller mill to my wish list and see what happens down the line.

Cheers.

So hard to get crush right - either buy your malt crushed or get a roller mill.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
