RG550 Pump - How to use
RG550 Pump - How to use
Hi All,
I wondered if any of you guys had experience of using one of these in your setup - an RG550 pump. It has an gadget attachment on it with a button to prime. The power lead from the pump goes to this and then the wire out from here goes to power.
I was given it by a friend from someone who had refurbished a bar. Thought it would be perfect to pump hot water to the tun from the HLT and then later in the process wort from the tun to the kettle.
I've put a plug on it! And got it make noise so I know it runs but it says on the side "do not run dry" so nervous of running it for more than a few seconds.
I press the prime button ( I assume this will flood water in without pumping it out) but it doesn't appear to draw water in from any of the three pipes. Should I hold/press once/pump the button? I put a test together with buckets of water and all three pipes dipped in. There is a blue toggle on the small pipe underneath which I can switch from horizontal to vertical so I tried both ways. This is clearly an open/closed but I don't what the pipe does so don't know how it should be set.
Anyone know what each pipe does and what I should be doing? Grateful for any help. Thanks in advance!

Wow I am a prize idiot! Guess how I got it working?
I attached the hosepipe (with water flowing slowly) to the black connector (shown in photos with clear tubing). Then turned it on.
Water comes out of the green hose sticking out the top of the priming gadget.
Still not sure what the blue on/off switch on the third pipe should be set to and what the prime button is for as it seems to fill instantly and start pumping.

Re: RG550 Pump - How to use
Horizontal - the blue switch horizontal shuts that third pipe off.
However, I can hear a motor but I think the water is flowing due to the hose input.
I would expect the pump to propel water from the output not dribble it out. This wont be any use to sit under a desk and pump up to a kettle.
I think I see why someone else threw it away

Re: RG550 Pump - How to use
I use one as the pump for CIP on my big kit. I'm also going to set it up to clean my kegs and casks . It doesn't have the blue box on it though. I know a commercial brewery that uses one on its 2.5 BBL pilot plant.
It is impressively powerful and not really suitable to use from the mash tun as the suction will set the mash bed solid. I use a bypass valve for flow control which is better for the pump than trying to speed control the motor.

Thanks Aleman. I got it going but maybe it's too powerful for a 5 gal setup.

The label says something like Max 40c, that rules it out for most things so is that right?
