PET bottles.

Post by joconn » Tue Dec 20, 2016 5:39 pm

I am told that those dark brown PET beer bottles will hold pressure longer than regular plastic bottles. Is this true? All replys appreciated.

the pet 500ml brown bottles sold by brew shops are a bit more substantial than those you freecycle from reuse of commercial drinks.

If you're comparing them to clear bottles, the dark brown colour would also help protect against skunking of hops I assume

Unfortunately not all are equal. The Cooper's seem to be the best, they also are supposed to have an oxygen barrier. Have had delamination problems with others. Glass is ultimately better and for long term storage I would use them, I have experience of the beer deteriorating quicker in them, particularly carbonation levels. Plastic are great for swapping beers by post or taking to a party or on holiday, or when you don't want to give away a glass one.

I use PET bottles for when I attend a venue that has banned glass bottles.

As Orlando mentions certain PET bottles, mainly the Crown Cap one can / have in the past had delamination problems, the actual internal liner comes away from the main bottle.

Copper screw cap bottles are the best to use if using plastic, on bottling screw cap tight, after bottling go around each bottle again and re tighten.

EDIT Cooper

I would add to that if you are going to reuse a bottle at least use a new cap with a proper seal. You can easily snip off the old neck ring and thus get a similar performance.
