What's the biggest element I can safely run of of a 16amp commando socket ? Can it handle 4.5kw ?

Depends on your supply voltage,at the uk's average of 240 v youd be needing 18.75A, 16A will get you 3.84kw, and if you use the declared voltage of 230v your going to need 19.5A ,16A at 230v gets you 3.68kw.

As far as I know you don't want to have an element pulling more than plug rating. I'm pretty sure you multiply the amps by voltage to get the power in wattage so.... Assuming 230 volt uk electrics....
16 amp x 230 volts = 3680 watts or 3.68kw

Anyway, to run a 4.5kw you would need to get a 32amp plug and socket

The original powercon is rated for 20A BUT dosn't have a breaking capacity ,so no live mating.You can also get 20A industrial plugs and sockets from companies like reyrole.very common before those modern fangled cee forms came along.Anyway, to run a 4.5kw you would need to get a 32amp plug and socket
