Hello all
I won a swan kettle urn thingy majic on eBay for £7 it’s got a built in element aswell as the base heater, I’m using it as a hlt but I’ve only just noticed how the hell am I going to Mark it up in litres?
I’ve seen sight glass kits but my diy is shocking I will end up with nothing left ?

As it's the HLT. And everything will get boiled later, you could do something as simple as using a dip stick with volume increments on it. I didn't want a sight glass on my boiler so use something similar to measure my pre boil volume for recording evaporation loss. That said, fitting a sight tube to a vessel is very straightforward, literally drilling two holes if you buy a kit.

Dip stick as said or simply use a steel ruler - pour in hot water (as it expands from cold) in 5l increments and make a note of the depth each time. I use exactly this method every time when filling my pan for the mash - in my case I'm simply looking for a depth of 21cm.
