As I say, stirring before power on when you've finished mashing helped to minimise scorching onto the element. I am one of a number of brewers who still had problems and thus modified the boiler, but it was quite simple.
First boiler I had (30 litre version) experienced the same issue you describe toward the end of boil on my 6th AG, then on the next brew it blew the thermal fuse. I upgraded this and no issues after that. Eventually sold this on eBay to get the 40 litre.
Second boiler I upgraded thermal fuse and the thermal cut out after a couple of issues with the wiring on one terminal frying itself (also replaced), worked like a dream afterwards. It's now also in the hands of another brewer as I decided to get a nice custom job off mrlard

I reckon its worth getting some spares just in case as I had to sling the whole brew because of the thermal fuse blowing and not having a replacement. There are loads of guides hereabouts and it really isn't difficult as long as you're sensible, elsewise electrickery could fry you...then how will the beer get finished!
