Re: 120L Boiler - Element Advice?
I've just bought this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/copper-immers ... t-14/40634
Plan is to install in into my HLT. Have removed the thermostat which was easy enough. Have just realised that it states 15A on the thermostat. Does this mean I can't use it in the garage? Grrrrrrrrrr... Things are never simple...

Whilst it does vary a bit, supply voltage in the UK is 240V, and will be for the foreseeable future. All UK infrastructure (i.e. sub-station transformers) kick out 240V and can't be altered, the actual average supply voltage in mainland UK is just over 240V, and just under in NI. UK elements are rated at 240V.chris2012 wrote:I was under the impression UK rms voltage is 230V
The old UK standard was 240V ±10%, the 230V -6%/+10% figure is a fudge to 'harmonise' the various EU supply voltages, although nothing on the ground actually changed.
Re: 120L Boiler - Element Advice?
3KW 240V rated Immersion heaters take 12.5A, the stat has to have a bit of leeway to accomodate the top end of the possible supply voltage range.floydmeddler wrote:I've just bought this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/copper-immers ... t-14/40634

All good then. Cheers fellas!
Re: 120L Boiler - Element Advice?
Its not much help but most of Europe used to be on 220V and the UK used to be on 240V this was harmonised to 230V +/- 10% across Europe with the UK supply now officially 230V +10%-6% but no country actually changed anything as there previous supplies are all within the spec of the new standard. As a result all appliances designed for use in Europe are designed to run on 230V so tend to burn out quicker in the UK as they are run on 240V and heaters are cooler in most of Europe as they are running on 220V.

All wired up

Went for 2 Screwfix 11" 3W immersion elements: http://www.screwfix.com/p/11in-incoloy- ... ater/53389
Haven't water tested it yet but am pretty certain it's water tight. Used a 65mm Qmax hole punch to cut the hole. Man that's a serious bit of kit. Loved using it. Befuddler kindly sold me all the bits that I needed. Cheers Befuddler! Really happy with the job.
What grade/type of wire should I use to wire the elements up?
Cheers!

What's the density on those bad boys? Seems a bit compact for that many watts....

Hey Ben. I'm a bit of a novice with this kind of thing... just good at following instructions.

Cheers

Ours used to hover around 245V. When Western Power replaced the local 11kV overhead supply three or four years ago they also replaced the transformers and as they had to reconnect everything I talked them into reducing our supply voltage to nearer 240V at the same time.sparky Paul wrote:Whilst it does vary a bit, supply voltage in the UK is 240V, and will be for the foreseeable future. Re: 120L Boiler - Element Advice?
Cheers! I'll go for those.
One final thing... I'd like to be able to connect/disconnect easily for cleaning. These seem suitable to me.

What do you think? I can't find them anywhere that's UK based sadly...
Cheers
