You could even mig it but you would need trimix and a roll of stainless wire by which point giving it to a local tig welder makes more sense in terms of cost. Will look nice if tig'd too..... Then again anything looks better than my mig welding- best described as functional.

Further to my reply yesterday if your welder places a lid on pot with a hole in to allow gas to be added internally at a low pressure to purge the system as he Tigs the outside it will weld itself making the inside a smooth surface if done right no cleaning to do =D> Hope I have explained myself okay

If it makes you feel better listen to this floydmeddler. After finishing work yesterday i went to give my honda cb500 motorcycle an oil change.I goes to loosen the drain oil nut but i tighten it by mistake #-o Thus resulting in the casin cracking and oil seeping from said crack.I`ve managed to locate a replacement on ebay for £30 so on top of oil,oil filter and now needing to buy a gasket for the bloody thing its cost me in more ways than one  People make mistakes thats why they put rubbers on pencils :)

According to the seller, the pot is " 304 grade stainless". What do you guys think? Does it look like it is?

Cheers

We used to weld stainless steel with argon-arc, if your local welder can get access to that it is much better especially when using it with heat...the joint will expand and contract without re-cracking.

Most likely - 304 is the most common grade used in cooking utensils and pots (and likely the cheapest). Took a look at my college notes and 304 is indeed very prone to work hardening which would explain the splitting when you tried to knock the dent out.

Fingers crossed all works out!

Floydmeddler, it's advertised as 1.2mm but has it stretched when it got that dent making that area 1mm?

Perhaps tourer. Fixed now though and the welder said that the price I paid was decent so I'm happy enough.

Will try to get one up later. It's pretty untidy at points. I don't mind though.
