Cornikeg suppliers?
Cornikeg suppliers?
Hello
I already have a Cornikeg that I bought off e-Bay. Had no troubles so want to replace the plastic barrels with these. Any advice on best suppliers of these? I have seen these from Hamstead Brewing Centre at £67 for a complete adapted keg with S30 valve and bar type tap. Any advice welcomed.
ps if only they were a little larger.

If you are going to get a few of them, I'm not sure why you'd want to get them adapted with S30 valves etc.
Leave them 'intact' and get a CO2 regulator, disconnects, taps, line and you're done.

+1 to both the above. Norm is the man - many people on here use him, myself included; he generally includes disconnects and a bit of beer line within the same price that his best competitors charge for just the keg.
I don't think he does the S-30 conversion though, but I'd only go with that if you really can't find a supplier/filler of pub-sized gas cylinders locally. Relatively speaking S-30s are an expensive way to buy gas (particularly if you force carbonate) and not as convenient to use because they deliver brief bursts rather than sustained pressure.
But if you have to go for a conversion to S30 then the quality of the conversion matters - the safe working pressure of the corny may be compromised if its not done well, and if a much lower rated pressure-release is incorporated in the conversion for safety (such as using the combined valves designed for plastic pressure barrels) you may struggle to force carbonate without losing the gas. So I'd ask a few questions before buying a number of converted ones.
Cheers

+1 for Norm
Helpful, knows his stuff and well priced.
Agree with Kev that S30 conversions only good if no other choice / supplier of gas.

Re: Cornikeg suppliers?
Not sure how up to date it is but theres a thread here with a link to a map of gas suppliers. There seem to be different approaches; some suppliers try to charge you a rental per month or have a limited time between refills but others just charge a one-off deposit and then per refill - at the slow rate I use gas the latter seems best for me. Some people even chat up their local or something and get a cylinder loaned to them..
Also, Norm can supply full gas cylinders but its uneconomical for him to swap/refil them by post and many suppliers refuse to refill other's cylinders (or impose a heavy testing charge) so you 'may' not be able to get it replenished locally. That said, I still went with one of his to get me going when I worked out that even if I just ditched the cylinder after use it'd still cost less than an equivalent number of S30 refills; in the event I find myself making occasional trips to him for various things anyway, and so can refill the cylinder (as a backup to my main one) at the same time..

Re: Cornikeg suppliers?
Not quite on the same thread but it's Corney related........ Anyone know if you can convert a pin-lock system to a ball-lock system disconnect?
Re: Cornikeg suppliers?
So can anyone tell me?? can you or is this a stupid question that no-one wants to answer?4
Re: Cornikeg suppliers?
Not a stupid question but perhaps difficult to find someone who has actually done this as I think the ball lock are much more common here. This site suggests you can swap the posts (if the threads are the same of course).froggi wrote:So can anyone tell me?? can you or is this a stupid question that no-one wants to answer?4

Alternatively you could ask Norm or I believe www.candirect.de will also help with questions.
A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.
Re: Cornikeg suppliers?
Thanks mooj... From that info, instead of buying Corneys off eVil-bay, it might be wiser to buy from candirect instead as refurbs are close to £46 posted from Germany. Would that incur a customs charge at this end I wonder?
Re: Cornikeg suppliers?
I thought if it was within the EU you were ok as far as customs charges go?
Re: Cornikeg suppliers?
You won't pay any customs charges on anything from wi thin the eu unless it's alcohol or fags.
Although I'd just hit up norm if I were you, he'll normally throw in some disconnects and beer line fornotmuch more than one from Germany.

Re: Cornikeg suppliers?
I'm not 100% sure but I think you can end up paying a different VAT rate. EU countries are free to set their own rate between certain limits (15% to 25% I think) and you pay the rate that applies in the country of origin. I've had stuff from Germany in the past and iirc I paid 19% VAT (UK rate was 17.5% at the time).bod wrote:You won't pay any customs charges on anything from wi thin the eu unless it's alcohol or fags.
