Hi Clive -A few years back there were some on ebay for around £70 but I've not seen them for quite some time.
I eventually succumbed and bought a Hanna HI-96801, fortunately I found one on ebay so not as expensive as it might have been. I don't think you will find a digital one for under £100.

Test the meter this afternoon with my cheapo chinese one.

Made a Brix Solution with spray malt (nearest sucrose I had available) to a mix of 25%

Hanna Meter mesured 24.7 Brix
Cheapo Chinese Meter 24.6 Brix

So at least both meters are reading near enough the same.

The Hanna one is a hell of alot easier to read, being a digital read out, the cheapo Chinese one being an eye optical reading (which at least with mine always seems to be a little fussy to read the smaller units)

Which one would I buy if I was to start again, depends on the budget available, theres nothing wrong with the el cheapo one.

Come brewday etc I`ll probadly use both for a quick test reference against each other, using the results from the Hanna Meter for record purposes.

I couldn't get a Hanna one, but have just bought a Milwaukee one Last weekend I took it to a brewing meet up and compared it to A Hanna . . The case is the same, it's made in Romania like the Hanna . . . once calibrated they read the same, the Hanna was the one that was out by 4 brix. . . . Only shame was that I didn't get the option to by it without prepaying the import charges :(
