Post by chris172 » Sun Jan 26, 2014 11:19 am

.... need to sort my Ph out when using StarSan as a sanitizer as it's always going cloudy and don't want to risk infection.

I have it, out of the box it read my buffer solutions perfectly so I'm happy with it.

Just bought my own pH meter too, but it has a lot more use than just the starsan - formost being able to monitor the mash pH and strike water pH if you're an all grain brewer.

Personally, I went for one of the cheaper chinese types - we used to have a few of em in the chemistry lab at school and they performed ok for quick checks, so for £7 including the buffers, I couldnt argue. As long as they calibrate to the buffers....

You can buy premade buffer solution kits from ebay for about a tenner

Hard to say without having it here yet, but the ones we used, provided you looked after em, only needed a tweak every now and then. Personally, I'll do a buffer check every time before I use the tester - just make sure to keep them clean and wash the probe head down with de-ionised water between tests (and uses) - keeps the buffer accurate and clean.

I'd go for one with a resolution of 0.01. You can get the Voltcraft ATC100-PH for £40 from Conrad electronics. There're a few here who use it with satisfaction.
Best wishes

I wouldn't go to the expense of buying a ph meter just for starsan. Strips are accurate enough for starsan

Despite my starsan going cloudy when I read the ph it's well within range I've only a has a problem when I've kept it for long period...strips are just as good for this ..However a ph meter is handy long term

True, but a packet of strips cost almost as much as the cheaper meter and you can use the meter repeatedly.

Add on the buffer solutions, storage solution, probe cleaning solution (if you use it with wort) and it's getting a little expensive. I'm sure I paid about £1 for 100 strips

Yeah. Without it the probe will dry out and eventually not work.

Yep, for starsan I now just use the cheapo Tesco Ashbeck.
