Temp dial on an Igloo?

Post by pads72 » Mon Jan 27, 2014 5:00 pm

I've a 45L Igloo mash tun, similar to PDTNC's build here: http://pdtnc.wordpress.com/2010/12/30/b ... -mash-tun/

Has anyone done a cold box mash tun build and put in a temperature dial thermometer such as MrLard and Angel Homebrew sell?
Or is the thread on the dial body too short for the walls of the mash tun?

Cheers
Paddy

I think you would need a dial sized hole in the outer skin so u cld fit the thermometer well into the inner skin to seal,
pm/email mrlard and or angel for the thermometer measurements to confirm. but the thermopot builds ive seen have had the dials sunk into the outerskin.
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

Fil, you were right... I did one today, bit of a ball ache, but I'm happy with the result!

The q-max cutter naturally wasn't long enough, and I'm an impatient bugger, so decided to improvise! Drilled a bigger hole on the outer skin with a spade bit, to allow the q-max to cut the 14mm hole on the inner skin for the thermometer thread.

Then came the real improvisation! To create a outer hole big enough to sink the body of the dial, I heated a modelling blade on the gas job and gradually melted/cut the outer skin. Then cut away some of the insulation to allow the dial to bed in to the right depth, all tidied up with a loose Stanley blade.

Hi Pads

That looks a very tidy job, good fit

Just for info, the size used on the customers thermos pot below to sink the thermometer was a 86mm holesaw

Thanks AHB! If I had been the patient sort, I would have waited to get a bigger hole saw than those I already had, but I couldn't wait!

Yep, the centre hole is 14mm for the thread to fit through

Then sealed to stop liquid falling out guess it saves you opening during mashing

Looks like you did just as good a job without it

Saved a few quid and how often would you need a 86mm hole saw if you bought one !

The thread/temp probe sit on the inside of the Igloo, with a silicone 'o' ring over the thread, then a washer and a nut to create the seal - sorry, should have taken an interior photo!

Yep, the seal seems good and the dial is in nice and snug. Nice dials by the way, really large and clear. Just need to test it out now!
