Getting fermentation fridge to 28 degrees

Post by beerlover1983 » Sun Feb 02, 2014 1:06 pm

Right i have a fermentation fridge with a 60watt tube heater below the fermenter and it all connected to a temp controller.
It holds a temp of 19 to 21 really well. But i want to start doing saisons ans want to push the temp to 24 and up to 28 degrees. But the heater does not seem to cut it.

Does anyone use anything more powrful to gain a heat of 28 or anyone thats done saison up to 28.

cheers

I used a brewers edge mat from Williams brewing and did a saison with Wyeast 3724 at 30 degrees and it came out really well, probably my second best beer ever. I also used a step mash as suggested in Farmhouse Ales. I did have a ceramic pet heater that worked great but was a little too aggressive and melted the top of my freezer. Maybe use two bulbs in tandem?

In the past when I used to make a lot of Belgian brews, I used to use a tube heater and a heating belt strapped to the outside of the fv in the brew fridge connected to the STC-1000.

That's what I was thinking! I've got some lager yeast ready to go this weekend after my Anchor Steam clone, and am looking forward to getting a saison brewed in the summer. :D It's like food, I don't eat salad in the winter and wouldn't cook a stew in July - embrace the seasons!

Cheers,
Jamie

I want the beer ready fir summer not brew it then plus want to maintian a temp in that range. For those that use a brewbelt are they ok to be left on for a period of time if connected to a temp controller.

I've been using one for a year, they're fine. I even have mine just lying on the floor of the fridge as I thought that if it was in close proximity to the temp sensor, which I have taped to the side of the FV it might cause too much of a lag between the temp reading and the actual temp of the beer.
Best wishes

If you had the space, as you don't need the cooling capabilities of the fridge, you could build an insulated cupboard using kingspan / celotex, and heat it with an inexpensive fan heater.

I wrap my 5 gallon Demi with a heated bed blanket connected to a ATC800 in my brew fridge.Temps of 30C are easily attainable.

while thin on the ground these days an incandescent light bulb can kick off lot of heat, if light is an issue mount one in an upturned tin can of a suitable size.
