Corny keg, excessive foaming of beer

Post by neilmcca » Mon Feb 03, 2014 12:55 pm

Just thought i would post here first, it might save me a few quid,

I have a keg which when i try to pour a pint from it via my kegerator from the door fitted tap, all i get is a glass full of foam,
i've tried varying the pressure to no avail, all other kegs are fine so its not the tap, line etc.
i've stripped down the keg and thoroughly cleaned it, theres no obvious signs of blockages in the posts or tubes.

i think it may be the poppet valve but not sure, i half filled the keg with water/soda crystals, pressurized it, and then gave the top of the poppet a poke to bring the water/soda crystals up through the tube,
the moment i poked down the poppet, it "juddered",
theres no obvious sign of damage to it, is it time to buy a new one ? or is there anything anyone can suggest that could fix it.
i've had a look around, and they seem to be available only from overseas sellers.

thanks in advance

Neil.

Have you tried unscrewing the valve on the keg?

A bit of hops might have got stuck there.

I've had foaming and in my case it has been down to over carbonation or too short beer line, the recipe has an impact too, lots of Wheat and Oats seem to make more foam. As your others are working I assume you have covered all them bases already so it could be the poppet.

Hop and Grape do spares.

EDIT, or it could just be a stuck hop leaf, I never thought of that.

If u mean the pressure release valve, no i haven't, i kinda dismissed that as a possible cause.

have you tried stripping everything down, cleaning, and inspecting/replacing and lubricating the o rings (the internal ones)?

i have been looking for spares recently and i think we really get ripped off in the UK as compared to the US.
I have been looking for new disconnects, if anyone can recommend the best place to get them.

Just checked, the out tube is fine, it's a straight tube as opposed to the more regular curved tube, i held to a light and looked through it, seems fine.

totally agree, just paid £4 for a poppet, delivery charge was £4:70, £8:70 in all.

probably cost H & G 50 pence to buy and about a quid to post it ! nice profit...

No, the plugs-/post valves.

Neil,

I was going through the same earlier in the year - I couldn't get a decent pour with the level of carbonation I wanted. The problem is most likely that the pressure is changing too much at the tap. I think you only want the beer to be about 2 psi above atmospheric once it gets to the tap, otherwise you get uncontrollable foam. You need to add a significant length of small ID hose to drop the pressure...

See my post here for what I did:

Hope it helps

Neil

Sorry I just realised your issue is specific to one keg, should have read your post better. My reply is likely not useful :)

Thanks anyway,
I have received a new poppet and put it in, i have some lager fermenting and will try it out towards the weekend, maybe next week.
I'm pretty sure it was down to the old poppet juddering/vibrating when pressed down.
