aeration

Post by wilfh » Thu Feb 06, 2014 2:02 pm

Does anyone have any comments about aeration or oxygen. I was thinking about using oxygen as aeration seems like an infection risk. Am I being over cautious?

Could people share what they are using?

Many thanks
Wilf

I've just bought a wort aerator from Brew UK, (hasn't arrived yet so haven't used it). I've read good and not so good things about them, but I thought worth a try. They should be OK regarding infection risk as they incorporate an in-line filter which you sanitise before each use.

Inline HEPA filter and air . . . although be prepared to deal with the volume of foam . . . I also use pure O2 but do that mainly with lagers . . .although I don't use the in line air stone for that one . . . If flush the FV with 02 and run the wort in with lots of splashing . . .I use a conical FV Though so it's quite easy to do

Yeah, I've heard about the foaming, but should be OK as I use a 33l FV for 23l batches, so plenty of head room. I did though buy that with the intention of upping my volumes to 27l - haven't got round to it yet.

This is my setup:

Welders oxygen - 110 litres for 25 ish quid
Flow meter from ebay china
0.5 micron stone & SS racking cane from Hop & Grape.
Tubing & jubilee clamps to hook it all up together.

Works super. Getting full attenuation & very fast starts with my fermentation. For standard gravity Im at 2 litres per min for 30 secs.

Well I brewed on Sunday instead of Saturday and had intended to use my new aerator. However, I didn't unwrap it until approaching the end of the boil, only to discover that it comes with a European mains plug. I do have a shaver adapter which would have worked but I couldn't lay my hands on it, and quite frankly at that point in the brew day I couldn't be arsed fitting another plug. So first use deferred until the next brew - early march.

The brew day went fantastically BTW, my first using H2SO4 for alkalinity reduction. Mash pH almost spot on at 5.33 (5.35). Also first was the use of Mangrove Jack's Burton Union yeast, so I'm hoping that will work out OK.
Best wishes
