Since many of you lot are jolly skilled in brewing toy builds I thought that I would ask your guidance.
I am planning to build a hop rocket to go between the plate chiller and the fermenter.
I anticipate using a 120 litre mango chutney blue barrel jobber, with a feed at the bottom and the outlet at the top, screened with stainless gauze in each case.
Any ideas or thoughts gladly appreciated.
Cheers!

Re: Big Hop Rocket
How big a brew length are you doing?
Don't you risk having the volume of wort in the 120L hop-rocket stuck there.
Maybe feed at the top and outlet at the bottom would minimise waste?

Re: Big Hop Rocket
You have a good point, I was going for extraction efficiency over losses. Could potentially lose 3 casks in there. Brewlength would be 10 to 12 barrels.
That said, if I ran through with water after the copper was empty and stopped when the colour indicated a lack of wort, no appreciable losses. Extraction efficiency is bound to be better with a bottom inlet.

Re: Big Hop Rocket
What you want, is a sealable vessel that way you can drive the remaining beer out under pressure

Re: Big Hop Rocket
I was just going to post something similar to what darkonnis said.
I have a hop rocket and it assembles in to a sealed unit with the wort flowing from bottom to top. I upend the rocket at the end of transfer to allow the wort to drain out.....that caught me out the first time I used it and I ended up covered in the stuff

Re: Big Hop Rocket
Do you agree on 120 litres being a suitable vessel size for a 12 barrel maximum brewlength?
Any advice in fittings etc?
Cheers.

Re: Big Hop Rocket
Following on from the idea to upend to get the last out. What about rigging up some sort of barrel lifter /rotator so you can go bottom to top until the end and then rotate to get the last out. What are you trying to acheive with it though? Can you not achieve the same with flameout hops?
Re: Big Hop Rocket
Fittings? Probably a very large hop filter either at the top of the tub with the feed coming in the bottom, or vice versa. 120L should be enough one would think.
