Mash tun manifold for this?

Post by Deebee » Wed Mar 26, 2014 12:44 pm

Gents.

I have been looking for a more all purposte mashtun then the two i have now.

At present i have a smaller one for grist batches og up to 5 kilos, and a larger one for anything over.
This obviously takes a fait bit of space so i am considering getting either an igloo ice cube ( as used by many in the states, of a round one like this

http://www.camping-online.co.uk/igloo-c ... ooler.html
I think some of the members here have this type and i wonder how they have designed and made their maniforld for the tun. I imagine the tap is a simple thing to sort out by just removing the existing?

I also wonder if this causes any issues in regard to efficiency due to it being round? I batch sparge so don't think it will be too much of an issue.

Its quite expensive but would be worth the cost if it saves me space and can be used for everything batch wise.

thanks
Dave

Channeling doesn't apply to batch sparging so a braid mash tun filter would be easiest. Strip the braid from a flexible tap connector. You don't need to bother with loops/tees, just clamp one end onto the tap and block & clamp the other end.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

thanks

Would i need to strengthen it in any way som as the weight of the grain does not make it collapse?

I don't think anyone has had braid collapse. I did notice I could pull/squash it a bit along its length and the geometry of the holes in the mesh altered but not enough to make it wort-a-proof.

Ok, and i guess that a normal weldless ball valve with the braid clamped onto a barb is good enough?

I clamped mine to a hoselock piece that screwed onto the back of my plastic tap. Ball valve will be fine. I suppose every now and then someone disturbs whatever filter they have with over-enthusiastic stirring.

Hi again all.

So, it looks like this will be in the box and i just had a look on ebay and found this.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-Ste ... 43a7b9b779 would this be suitable for the mainifold? I think the fact that getting the braided hose without the hassel of having to remove the rubber has to make things easier. Id this is good, how much would i need to use and what would the best diemention be?

i imagine that a standard stainless hose clip would be suitable for fixing onto a barb inside the MT?

Suitable but you only need around 30 cm. The diameter of the mesh varies: 6mm if fully stretched, 15mm if fully compressed. Stainless clamps are ideal.

the flexible tap connectors are only about £2 - £3 for 300mm, and come with ready fitted connectors on both ends.
