First attempt at hop strainer

Post by Old Speckled Ben » Wed Apr 09, 2014 7:46 am

Morning guys

Just thought I'd share my first attempt at making a hop strainer for my Electrim boiler

Image

Just made out of some spare copper i had laying around and about 15 minutes work

Going to give it a bit of a test tonight with just water in the boiler

Couple of questions:
1. How do I clean/sterilise it?
2. Does it look ok?

Thanks as always :)
Ben

Looks good.

More holes might help. Possible slow run off with hops in the kettle.

Boil it maybe
Fermenter(s): Lambic, Wheat beer, Amrillo/Cascade Beer
Cornys: Hobgoblin clone, Four Shades Stout, Wheat Beer, Amarillo/Cascade Ale, Apple Wine, Cider, Damson Wine, Ginger Beer

Thanks, awalker

Think I'll pop a few more holes in it tonight, then

I'll give boiling it a try and make sure it's clean before it goes in the precious beer :)

Cheers
Ben

Yes definitely more holes needed.

+1 lots more holes, if you are finding the drill slips try banging a nail to get a nice small guide dent.

Thanks guys

I stuck some more holes in it last night and then gave it a quick boil in the electrim

It's cleaned it up a treat and the flow rate (with just water) is pretty good

I'm going to put even more in tonight

You can see from the photo that I've cut and shaped the end that goes in the tap so I can just force it in to the tap from the inside, but I don't feel this is a brilliant solution and i'm a bit worried it will fall off the tap during the boil

Any ideas?

Cheers :)

Here's what I did viewtopic.php?t=58074
I made the stopper just long enough so it wedged in against the boiler wall.

But under a settled mash, each hole should ideally be partially blocked by a stable arrangement of bits of hop.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

This is a hop strainer though.

Lol, technically, it's going to do a little bit of grain straining, too as I'm doing BIAB and I'm sure some really determined bits of grain will make their way out of the mashing bag lol

Brilliant, thank you, that looks slightly more professional that what I've done LOL
