Probe thermometer

Post by gibbiem » Fri May 23, 2014 4:49 pm

Just ordered one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... OC:GB:3160

Just for cheapness.

Wondering what the best way to fix it to my HLT will be? the weldless ones you can buy seem to have a nut attached on the back. I was thinking of using a bung from an airlock, hoping the hole will be the right size to be water tight when the probe is pushed through it. I then thought about fitting a tank connector which would be the right size to force the bung in to create a water tight seal again.

Thoughts?

Any suggestions chaps - there must be loads of people on here who've done a similar thing?

Weld less is best. MrLard/homebrewbuilder sells them
Auber do some excellent ones but expensive.

Airlock bung would work but I wouldn't do it

I'm waiting for a floating thermometer to be delivered. I reckon I can pop that in and easily keep an eye on the temp. I'll use a digital probe thermometer to check when the water is near ready.

I test my cheap thermometers in ice/water and boiling water.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Cheers for the bump Jim! It's arrived today and it's got a nut on the back! Bonus. Should be able to come up with something

go mad with ptfe tape and wrap a good soft pad of the stuff round the hilt and some round the thread, a suitibly sized SS washer betwen the nut and pot would help spread the pressure evenly... check the nut for rust after its been wet a few times.. ;) good luck..

Think I've got a plan. A length of 15mm copper pipe or smaller, connect to a tank connector and seal off the end of the pipe inside the hlt. So it's literally a well into the hlt that the probe can slide in to. It will all be sealed via the tank connector. Hope this makes sense....
