Another Vacuum Pack Thread. Buffalo.

Post by LeeH » Sun Jun 08, 2014 3:41 pm

I'm looking at a vac machine to store unused hops ect.

After been chuffed with the quality of the Buffalo boilers I looked at Nisbetts and saw this.

Has anybody owned one?

it is very powerful crushes cans for example

I have the andrew james sealer. It's excellent so far. The bags it came with didn't like hops very much but i bought these and they were much better. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271120727415? ... 1439.l2649

I use the JML vacuum packer which works very well with the JML bags. In factpretty much everything that goes into our freezer gets vacuum packed

Guys how long does vacuum packing extend the life of hops. Im forever chucking 50g here 40g there of hops out as they age in the fridge when opened. How long after vacuum packing can you store hops in the fridge before they degrade ? Should you vacuum pack before freezing ?

Got the answer online - over a year in the freezer - Ive ordered an Andrew James machine and the bags also suggested above - thanks for the links. This will more than pay for itself over the space of a year.

I use an Eiffel Pro and I'm very happy with it. It removes far more air than the JML sealer that I used to have.

It completely depends on what variety it is though. Certain varieties will store much better than others. Something like Magnum stores really well but something like Cascade is pretty useless.

Are you keeping your hops in the fridge? You want them in the freezer.

Think I'll go for the pellets over flowers and use the vac for malt.

I'm going to order the buffalo and take a chance with that.

Yes keeping them in the fridge...mistake I know. Keeping in freezer from now on (vacuum packed)...I will do some research in to what keeps and what doesnt - also a calculator in beersmith which may help

Where did you get the bags?

I've got the same machine and other than the "genuine" Andrew James rolls/bags, all the other ones I've had issues getting them to either vac or seal. The ones you've got there look just the job :)
I persuaded the Mrs that she needed one and have been using it myself. It is a cracking machine and well worth the money :D

Cheers Tom

awright Tom

good question
i have found that on a few bags that do not vacuum
The solution to that type of bag is to get a strip of the bag material that does vacuum you only need a strip about an inch wide of it
stick that in the offending non vacuum-able bag top to bottom then fill with what ever and the vacuum will work

here is the type i use
