Hot coleman cooler

Greetings all, i have a coleman cooler 48quart (45 litre) capacity, i have fitted a ball valve but the lid doesn't appear to have any insulation in it? I put a few litres of hot water in it to test for leaks and the lid was very hot. I was thinking would it be possible to drill a 1/2" hole in the side of the lid and fill with polystyrene "balls" the type thats used in packaging then put a plug in the hole.

A lot of coolboxes don't have insulated lids. What about using expanding foam ?

i used balls of bubble wrap pushed into the small square sections of my cold box lid, others have used expanded foam as Andy suggests or perlite or vermiculite from the garden centre both similar grains to the balls your thinking about. its a gotcha of cold boxes the other being they probably include the lid volume in the '45L' published size.. so in reality its probably closer to 40 actual litres in volume..

The expanding foam would be great but i'm not sure it would get into all the cavities so perlite may seem a good option by me being able to shake the lid to fill up the cavaties with perlite. It's odd that the manufacturers go to a lot trouble to insulate the sides and base but ignore the lid.
