Temperature Probe Position

Post by crookedeyeboy » Fri Jun 13, 2014 9:31 am

Whats the general consensus of where to put you temperature probe in a fermenting fridge?

I know some people, like myself, just leave the probe next to the FV no where specific.
Some people put the probe in a bottle of water to emulate being in a body of liquid

Thoughts please!

It has to be on the side of the FV or in a decent size bottle of water.

I tape mine on the FV the cover it with a square of foam.

It's no good measuring the air temp.

I plan to put mine in a thermowell in the side of the fermenter. Probably 1/4 the way from the bottom.

Its cooled via an internal coil, and I'm hoping the natural convection of fermentation will help with 'hot spots'

Thanks guys, I've tried the bottle of water trick but I got vastly different readings.
Think I'll tape it to the side of the FV!

mid-way down pot

sensor against FV -> bubble wrap -> gaffer tape. Job done

yeah i go against side of FV with insulation around (though it doesn't have to be majorly thick or tight, just enough to hold the sensor pressed against the FV). always pretty damn close whenever i check it with a thermometer in the beer. if you're using a heat mat or something like that close to the FV then probably best to put the sensor fairly close to it to stop that part overheating. i've tried using a probe in a DJ full of water but it's given me really bad results
