So i have just embarked on a quest to have beer on tap at my flat starting with a 9ltr corny.Im aware that to carbonate it properly i need to do this in a kergerator of which i have but not at my flat.
My real plan is to carbonate the beer in keg. Then bring it to my flat but would like to serve it at a good temp.I am limited on space and it needs to be swmbo freindly.
I had thoaght of a kegglove which is a neoprene cover with a ice blanket inside which is ok but obviously needs planning ahead of time.
I would like a flash chiller but am unsure whats the smallest i can get and im guessing they need sufficient air flow around them so i couldnt build a case to make it look wife freindly ?
I have considerd the cool boxes that plug in but from what ive seen they wont go to a good temp.
My lastest find is a wine fridge i havent worked out the size fit for the keg but could be a sound option ? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Russell-Hobbs-B ... pd_cp_kh_0

Re: Advice on chilling a 9ltr corny keg
that looks ideal if the keg and disconnect headroom will fit inside.. temp control already fitted
i run a shelf chiller, and NO you most defiantly can not box it in, or even pop it in a big closed cupboard.. mine is sat in a 2-2.5m cubed ex coalshed, and will overheat if running with the door closed.
shelf chillers are fairly noisy too.. However for personal use they dont need to run24/7 as they do in the bars n clubs.. mine will chill down to 0C in 30-40mins, if run the day before it will take 25-30mins.. and the waterbath is a good cold sink to pour a few pints with if its just yourself having a few samples of an evening, if running this way a lil mod to run the recirc or agitator independent of the main power will get the most of the cold in the waterbath.
only negative with the fridge is the minimum temp, - 7c so no 5C ice cold lagers mid summer
- not a biggy i doubt i could tell the difference between a 7C pint and a 5C pint, unless compared side by side, and then ????
careful examination of where to drill holes for gas in/beer out will be needed, but at that price point i would bet the cooling is concentrated on a back panel, and the sides are coolant pipe free, to be on the safe side drill holes in the shell carefully and probe the insulation with a blunt stick for coolant tubes just in case, before committing to drilling all the way thru.
