Hop back

Post by gibbiem » Thu Jul 24, 2014 9:25 pm

Just made one out of the round drinks cooler thing that came with my Coleman. Can't wait for next brew day!! Anyone else use one and what do you think of them?

Show us how you built it and you might get more interest. :)

looks good that mate, dont have a pic of mine yet but i've used one of these - http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-5696A718G ... B00168QW3Y.

The existing hole to drink from fits a hose barb perfectly for inlet and just drilled a hole at the bottom for an outlet. Just need to fit some steel mesh too

Looks like a nice little project. How will you use it? Will you force the beer through the hops when bottling/kegging?

Plan to run beer from the kettle via the hop back to the fv. Then use my immersion chiller in fv

I use my underback from the mash to the Copper with high low level switches to save on hanging over it watching the flow.

I do love your setup scotia, have been following your build thread with interest.

But, you say you use a hopback between your MT and Kettle? I thought you just had a grant there. I get that you could use it dual purpose, but running wort through a hopback out of the MT and then boiling it in the kettle removes all the purpose/advantage of a hopback doesn't it?

Unless I'm misunderstanding how you are using it?

I must have got the same Coleman set as yourself and have had the flask laying around having never been used. I've also been contemplating what container to use to make a hop back... so now have a little project to do! Cheers.

Understandably busy looking at what you've been getting up to! Just wanted to check I wasn't missing out on some interesting technique for hopback before the mash!
