FV cooling options.

Post by Fat boy quiff » Sat Sep 27, 2014 12:53 pm

In the past I have owned only one FV tank which is equipped with a fish tank type immersion heater for warming the tank during primary fermentation, and a stainless tube cooling coil fed by a maxi 100 cooling unit for cold conditioning. The flow and return pipe feeds to the coil entered the vessel via two cutouts in the lid. I now own a second FV tank which is pretty well airtight apart from the airlock in the lid and I would like to maintain the integrity of this tank ie not have cut outs for the flow and return cooling pipe feeds. The question is, what is the best alternative method of keeping the tank cool during cold conditioning. I understand that I could wrap a cooling coil around the outside of the tank and then insulation, but how efficient is this. I must confess that the internal cooling coil was very effective at keeping the beer cool, holding 7*c even in summer. The logic of this effort is to reduce the amount of equipment inside the secondary FV to reduce the chance of spoilage.

Thanks.

This is my solution £50 off the bay and can take two fvs. Need a sparky to work out how best to get an stc with heater in for all in one solutions currently have fish heater in a small bath for heating.

the brewfridge is a great option if you can make the space, under the counter fridges work well but benefit from sitting at waist height..
ist update for months n months..

This is my effort - the fridge was free and cools down in about 5 minutes if that and holds temp even when it is hot outside - i use an stc to controll the fridge and a small heater - and yes I am a qualified sparky!

Similar idea to wrapping a coil around the vessel is to weld a panel to the vessel which is more efficient and then cooled using a maxi cooler.
